Toronto-based EcoPackers is creating fully compostable products that can one day replace most, if not all, single-use plastics such as cutlery and bags.
EcoPackers’ story started with creating compostable peanut packaging but the company has since scaled its vision to concentrate more on the compostable technologies to replace the non-bio degradable polystyrene and polypropylene single-use plastics than on the products itself.
The Toronto-based company’s plan is to make them cost effective, compatible and compostable. A key strategy for this is to create products that the existing single-use plastic manufacturers can produce without much of an investment or any massive changes to their existing machinery.
For this reason, the company has an R&D centre in China and works with plastic manufacturers closely.
The company recently received a 4.3 million Canadian dollar funding.
EcoPackers’ path has been facilitated by University of Toronto’s entrepreneur and innovation programs.
